How Often Should You REALLY Be Cleaning That?

Updated: Jun 12

Let’s be honest: most of us don’t love cleaning, and even those who do can still fall behind on how often things should be cleaned. Between work, family, and everything else life throws at us, it’s easy to forget when the last time was that we scrubbed the baseboards, washed the curtains, or deep cleaned the fridge.

At Just Peachy Cleaning Co., we understand that life gets busy. But we also know that proper cleaning routines make your home healthier, happier, and more comfortable. So we’re breaking down how often you should really be cleaning key areas and items in your home — based on expert recommendations, adjusted for the Ontario lifestyle and climate.

Let’s dive into the nitty gritty of keeping your home peachy clean.

The Kitchen

🧊 Fridge

How often? Every 3 to 4 months for a full deep clean.

Why: Spills, expired food, and moisture can create mold, odours, and bacteria buildup.

Just Peachy Tip: Use baking soda to absorb odours and wipe down shelves weekly to keep grime under control.

🔥 Microwave

How often? Every week, or as needed if spills occur.

Why: It’s a hotspot for splattered food and bacteria.

Quick Trick: Microwave a bowl of water with lemon juice for 2–3 minutes to steam-clean the inside.

🍳 Stovetop & Oven

How often? Stovetop – weekly; Oven – every 3 months (or after heavy use).

Ontario Note: Winter comfort foods and holiday cooking can increase messes, so bump up oven cleaning in December/January.

🚰 Sink

How often? After every wash session

Why: Even though you've removed the dirt from your dishes, your sink is now covered in whatever was left behind.

Just Peachy Tip: After your sink is empty, rinse thoroughly and then use a few drips of dish soap to wash your sink then rinse again. Quick and effective!

Don't Forget: Wash your sink plugs and drain catches after each wash session too!

🧽 Dish Sponge

How often? Replace every 1–2 weeks.

Why: Sponges are bacteria magnets, even if they “look” clean.

Bedroom & Laundry

🛏️ Bedding

How often? Sheets: weekly | Duvet covers: monthly | Pillows: every 3–6 months

Why: Sweat, skin cells, and allergens collect faster than you think.

Winter in Ontario Tip: In dry months, dust mites thrive — wash bedding in hot water to combat allergens.

🛌 Mattress

How often? Every 6 months (flip/rotate and vacuum).

Why: Dust mites and skin particles settle in, especially during seasons when windows stay closed.

Bonus Tip: Sprinkle with baking soda, let sit, then vacuum to deodorize.

👚 Closets

How often? Seasonally

Why: Changing seasons = the perfect time to declutter, donate, and vacuum out dust bunnies.

Bathroom

🚽 Toilet

How often? Weekly, or more often for shared bathrooms.

Why: It’s an obvious one — for hygiene and odour control.

🚿 Shower/Tub

How often? Weekly

Why: Soap scum and mildew can build up quickly, especially with hard Ontario water.

🧼 Bathroom Sink & Counter

How often? Daily wipe-downs; weekly deep clean

Why: Toothpaste splatter, hair, and water spots sneak up fast leaving a slew of spit from everyone in the house!

🧴 Towels

How often? Every 3–4 uses

Why: Towels stay damp, making them a breeding ground for bacteria and mildew.

Living Room

🧹 Floors (vacuum/mop)

How often? Vacuum carpets weekly; mop floors biweekly

Ontario Specific: In winter, salt and slush get tracked inside. During those months, aim for twice a week near entryways.

🛋️ Couch & Upholstery

How often? Vacuum weekly; deep clean every 6 months

Why: Crumbs, pet hair, and skin oils all build up. Consider steam-cleaning for fabric furniture.

🪟 Curtains & Blinds

How often? Every 3–6 months

Why: They trap dust and allergens — often invisibly.

Just Peachy Bonus: If you suffer from allergies, do this more frequently in pollen-heavy seasons.

💡Ceiling Fans & Light Fixtures

How often? Every 3 months

Why: Dust settles quietly on blades and fixtures — don’t let it sneak by.

High-Touch Areas

🔘 Doorknobs & Light Switches

How often? Weekly

Why: Germs spread quickly in high-contact spots. A quick disinfecting wipe does the trick.

🎮 Remote Controls & Electronics

How often? Weekly

Why: These are among the dirtiest things in your home — and often overlooked.

📱 Phones & Tablets

How often? Daily

Why: They're constantly in your hands or on surfaces. Use an alcohol wipe or screen-safe cleaner.

Seasonal Deep Cleans

Certain tasks only need to be tackled a few times per year but make a big impact on the overall cleanliness and comfort of your home.

Spring & Fall Cleaning:

  • Wash walls and baseboards

  • Clean windows and screens

  • Clean behind/under large furniture and appliances

  • Organize storage areas (garage, basement, closets)

In Ontario, seasonal cleaning is essential to transition between winter slush and summer dust. Spring cleaning helps after the long shut-in winter, and fall cleaning preps your space before you start spending more time indoors again.

Pet Owners, Take Note 🐾

If you share your home with furry friends:

  • Vacuum 2–3 times per week

  • Wash pet bedding weekly

  • Mop weekly (especially in mud/snow seasons)

  • Lint-roll upholstery and clothes as needed — often!

Ontario’s weather means pets track in snow, rain, dirt, and leaves, which all contribute to messier floors and air.
